We are a part of a group of 4 couples who have rented a farmhouse about 10 miles north of Siena. We want to visit the hill towns, Florence and take an overnight trip to Venice. We also want to take a day trip to CT. Some of us have been to Florence and Venice before. Any advice.
Check out Lucca.
Try Montalcino if you like great wine and incredible food. Assisi is just gorgeous. It might have been our favorite hilltown. I just got back from spending a week in Siena in the ancient center and some of our best times were spent staying in the city for the day. It's a great place to just be on vacation sitting in a cafe on Il Campo doing nothing.

There are many wonderful drives and towns in the area. Check out the Slow Travel website http://www.slowtrav.com/italy/tuscany/mare_chianti.htm and from this link, note all of the "Travel Notes" in ths right hand nav bar. There are some great drives under Southern Tuscany in that list, too. Daytrip to the CT is, IMHO, not worth while. It's truly most charming at night and early in the day. I love it, but I don't think I'd be impressed if all I saw was a CT town between 11:00 and 15:00. Venice deserves at least two nights. Really. It's a pretty fair drive from Siena and it, too, is most wonderful early and late. How many days/nights are you in the farmhouse and in Italy? Visiting other locations? Ciao!
We will be at the farm house 12 days. Thanks for the information.
