Two weeks in Italy - Venice, Lake Region, Cinque Terre

We are planning on a two week trip in Sept. We are planning on covering Venice, one of the lakes (Orta?) and Cinque Terre. We have travelled to Lake Como and Tuscany. Should we skip the lake region and just do CT and Venice? Or are there towns/city between CT and Venice that is a must stop, i,e. Verona? We are open to suggestions to perhaps doing a day trip from CT.

If you haven't been to Verona, I recommend going. We spent 2 nights there and I would have liked having one more.

I think it is fabulous to spend more time in fewer places, so a week in Venice will be fantastic! You will really get to know Venice more than the average traveller. We spent 6 nights there in December and enoyed it very much. Just walking, with minimal itinerary, is great fun. There's a wonderful book "24 Great Walks in Venice" that you might pick up if you enjoy self-guided walking tours. The CT for a week might be a bit long unless you plan to do a lot of hiking. And if it rains, there's little to do, although curling up in your room with a book is an option. I'd go somewhere between Venice and the CT for 2 or 3 nights, and maybe keep your CT stop to 3 or 4 nights. I haven't been to Verona but will later this year, especially for the opera in the arena. Milan is an option if you'd like to see The Last Supper and the Duomo (there's more of course, but those are highlights), or you might go to Bologna.

We did a similar trip last fall minus the CT, as we are getting old enough that hiking is not really an option. We spent three days in Verona, which was lovely, three days in Sirmione on Lake Garda (45 minutes from Verona on the bus), taking a ferry around the lake one day, and then a week in an apartment in Venice. Having seen San Marco etc. on a previous trip, we avoided the crowds and just enjoyed the city and the art in its churches. Day trip to Padua. Very little time spent in getting from place to place, very much time in exploring where we were.

We did a very similar trip a few weeks ago. We started in Lake Cuomo, than Cinque Terre and Venice. We stayed four days in Lake Cuomo, Two Cinque Terre and 3 in Venice. We really drove until we got to Venice. We really enjoy some of the cities and towns in along the way. You have already been to Cuomo so I won't comment on that. However, if you are going from Cinque Terre to Venice you might want to stop at Milan, Verona or consider Padua. You really dont need a lot of time in Milan. One or two days to see the major sites like the Duomo and Last Supper is fine. Also a day in Padua is well worth it. We stopped there to see the Giotto Fresco and loved the city itself. I know many people on here love Venice and would love spending a week there. I think that is alot of time. You can really see Venice in 3 or 4 full days if you want to see other areas.
