Two weeks in Italy in January

We just got back from two weeks in Italy - Rome, Compania and Tuscany. There were some people, but the only real crowds were in the piazzas in Rome on New Year’s Day. The security wait for St. Peter’s on Jan 2 at 11:00 AM was only an hour, shorter than average. The Archaeological Museum in Naples was so empty it was creepy. Weather was good, highs 55-60 F each day and only a little bit of rain.

While we couldn’t enjoy the beach or the boat trip around Capri, this was the time window we had and everything else was great. I definitely recommend Italy as an off-season destination this time of year!

Unless you plan a beach vacation, if you visit mainly cities and towns, I also recommend visiting Italy between November and March. Crowds will be thin, prices will be lower. Winters in Italian cities south of the Apennines between Tuscany annd Emilia Romagna are never severe since those cities are at very low altitude therefore with very little chance of snow or ice.

Thank you for the trip report, so great you got to see Italy without the crowds! I envy you the timing. How was the weather? Who needs beaches when you have Italia!?

The weather was good. High temperatures were 55-60 F and lows were about 40. There were plenty of clouds and a little rain but even then it was showers that cleared quickly. We chose this time based on school schedule, but it turned out to be a great choice!
