I'll be spending 2-3 days in sicily with a car before heading to the Aeolian Islands for a few days. What should I see? I've been to Syracusa, but that's about it. I'll be there at the end of August. Thanks!
We found Agrigento, Selinunte, and Segesta to be absolutely wonderful if you are interested in ancient civilizations. The latter two are completely uncrowded and lovely. Erice is a favorite too. And we liked Taormina, even if it is touristy. Hard to find your way around with a car, but fun to walk around when you finally find your hotel. Also the Roman mosaic-filled villa at Villa Armerina was great.
R, it is going to be hot, hot, hot at the end of August. When you go to the beaches bring some sand/water shoes. Go to the museum in Lipari. Rent a moped and explore Lipari (there is NO traffic at all on the island!)Swim in the sulfpher mud on Volcano (bring a throw away suit.) Before going in the water at any beach learn what the Italian word "Medusa" means!
Steve, Thanks for the great tips! I was in Lipari two summers ago and the beaches were covered in the dreaded medusas (meduse?). I was thinking I'd locate a nice swimming pool just in case. I'm interested in your moped recommendation. I'd love to try it, but I'm sort of a cautious driver (read: a big chicken). How comfortable were you driving around the island? Do you have a rental agency recommendation? Driving tips? Also, since you've been to Lipari, I'd love any other recommendations (restaurants, etc) you might have. Grazie Mille,
Rose
