Friends, We can walk distances but it will take a toll. I think we would need to stay somewhere in Florence that we could return to in the afternoon for a rest. We can spend anywhere from $100 to $225 per night. (The stay is in mid October.). A B&B or hotel both work for us, however we will have questions and are hopeful for an extremely helpful front desk. Thank you!
Florence is pretty concentrated in its downtown area, so there are a number of hotels that would fit your requirements. If you purchase and study Rick Steves' Italy guidebook for 2019, you will be impressed with the number of possible places to stay. You'll need to get right on it, because October isn't that far away. Another source of hotel rooms is Booking.com, which will allow you to set your filters for price and location.
We stayed at Hotel Calzaiuoli 5 yrs ago
I believe it was about 170 euros a night then
Had a helpful front desk, elevator and air conditioning
Our room was lovely and the breakfast was great
It is right between the Duomo and the Uffizi, across the street from Orsanmichele church
Perfect for afternoon breaks, on the pedestrian shopping street but our room faced the back and was very quiet
I found on booking .com but booked thru their website for a discounted rate at the time
Thank for the Hotel Caluzouioli recommendation. Unfortunately, there is a bed bug report on this hotel. Hard to say with reviews, whether or not they are correct, but it is troubling. But thank you, so much, we are trying hard to find a place that we think will help us to survive (and thrive) in Florence.
Hi Benedict, I am sure you will find interesting the Hotel L'Orologio...right in Piazza Santa Maria Novella, a top rated hotel, very charming, gentle staff, very comfortable beds and delicious breakfast...the price is in your range!
Hope it is the one matching your needs.
Check out Hotel California (yes, that's really the name) on Via Ricasoli. We could walk anywhere we needed without much effort. They also had a great breakfast as I recall.
It's been renovated and bought by NH since I was there a zillion years ago. But look into the NH Collection Porta Rossa. When I stayed there, it was a really popular Tourist-Class hotel with every room different.
Thanks for taking the time to respond, I really do appreciate it. I'm afraid this hotel is out of our price range; they have done a truly lovely job renovating it seems!
hey benedict
don't know how many days you will be there (dates). you can use booking.com and place filters on left side, double or twin beds, lift/elevator, early check in or storage for luggage, check cancellation info, if apt how to get keys, if a hassle keep looking
casarabatti.com (an apt/guesthouse with kitchenette you do for yourself) and minimum days rental, pick your room
garbo charm, casa galante apts (apt with kitchenette and terrace, we like terraces for coffee and vino across river), you will need breakfast foods
relais Il campanile (double room with A/C, breakfast included)
hotel lorena (triple room. breakfast $6, in city center)
B&B Il mercato centrale ( higher price has breakfast included, A/C)
hope this gets you started and you can find something that suits you. enjoy and have fun

Terrific! I will look into all of them. Many thanks.
I enjoyed the Hotel degli Orafi. It's near the Ponte Vecchio and was a delightful place to stay.
Look into Hotel Casci, easy 6 min stroll up the street from the Duomo, def in your budget, in an historic building, elevator up to the level of the hotel. Great little hotel.
More on the budget side, we (70+ travelers) have stayed twice at RS-recommendedd Hotel Dali close to the Duomo area -- helpful front desk, elevator. We opted for bath-down-the-hall but there are many en suite rooms. They also have a nearby apartment (no elevator.)
After extensive "research and analyzing," I booked us a room at Il Guelfo Bianco at Via Cavour 29 for September. Breakfast was included and the reviews were "good." Rates were considerably lower than many of the other places I considered.
Check it out and see what you think. I'll find out in September whether I chose well.
It looks like a wonderful place. I'm curious what made you choose this particular hotel? Was it the price plus location? Much appreciate your time.
Hotel Balesteri
May I suggest an approach:
Open Google maps on your computer, make a walking route through all the sights you want to see, find the center of this walk, and then look for the hotel/B&B nearest to this place within your budget.
Doing it! Thank you very much.
Why did I pick Il Guelfo Bianco? We had been to Florence with the RS Best of Italy Tour...so the city was familiar to me. Our requirements were breakfast, reasonably priced, walking distance to sights, and rated well in RS book as well as TA. I agonized over my top three choices, driving my husband nuts, but finally "price" became the determining factor. The Il Guelfo was 200 euros less for 5 nights than the other choices because there was a discount for staying 5 nights, even with an upgrade to a deluxe room (larger).
Yes, it's true, I am agonizing. I have your hotel at the top of my list, though. Thanks for writing back.
Benedict-Just book one and be done with it. I find that this frees my mind to start planning other things. I Always agonize over lodging booking, but that is part of the process. All the research pays off when your trip runs smoothly!
Booked! Thank for all your responses.
hey benedict
which place did you book? as letizia states, looking, hemming and hawing drives us crazy and adds more gray hair. just got done with that for our upcoming trip to paris. now it's time to plan the fun stuff, give time for yourself to relax, have a glass of wine and people watch. don't forget the gelato.

We booked Hotel Davanzati due to the reviews stating the concerted help they give newbie travelers. We know there are many steps but that is really not our issue at this time. Thanks for your responses.
Glad that you found something you liked! Please let us know how you liked the hotel when you return?
