Two "extra" days?

We are just finalizing our families (wife and I, nine-year old son, mother-in-law, and Aunt) three week Italy trip for this summer. We are visiting family in room for five days, spending a week in Tuscany (mid-way between Sienna & Florence), four nights in CT, and four nights in Venice for our anniversary. We seem to have two "extra" days between CT and Venice. My question is, if you had two days between those two areas, where would you go?

What a great trip you have planned! I'm guessing you mean "Rome" and not "room", right? :-) I would suggest Verona as an excellent choice between CT and Venice. We went there last May and really loved it. The RS books include good info on Verona. Here are some photos I took in Verona in May 2011, in case you're interested. Happy travels.

As a followup, you might do three nights in CT and 3 in Verona, throwing in a daytrip to Gardaland (Italy's answer to Disneyland). Your son might really love that.

Yep - give Venice the extra nights. There is so much to see as you wander through the maze of alleys and canals. Murano and Burano also make for interesting daytrips. Also explore the tip of Venice Island down in St Elena. Lots of local families and parks with green grass and trees and playgrounds. It's not a heavy tourist area which makes it even better.

I second Michaels recommendation. Verona would be a great choice. when you say your are going in the "summer", you don't say when. If it is late July, that is opera season in Verona and rooms will be hard to find and, if found, very expensive.

I would add the 2 extra days to Venice and do day trips - Verona, Padua, etc.

Verona is a very good choice as others have suggested
you could also consider a day in Milan, the major sights are definitely worth a stop

The Verona opera actually starts in June, on 22 June this year. But not every place jacks up prices, and for some that do it is only on performance nights. Try B&B La Finestra sull' Arena and see if they can accommodate five people. We stayed there on an opera night ( which we attended) and Mossimo did not charge extra.

My first thought was Verona, but I haven't been there during opera season and it may be very crowded and expensive. I liked Ravenna a lot. The town is charming, easy to get around on rented bikes, and the world heritage sights (5th-6th century Byzantine mosaics) are superb.
