Hi all-
I'm traveling to Italy at the end of this month and I'm looking for a two-pronged grounded adapter for my laptop. I will be staying in an apartment during my stay so I don't want to buy a three-pronged one just in case there are only two-pronged plugs available. I know Magellan's has one, but unfortunately, it won't be available until a couple days before I leave for my trip, which won't provide enough time for shipping. If anyone has any other suggestions as to where I can find one, I would really appreciate it!
Try Amazon.com, they sell lots of different adapters & you can get fast shipping
I just learned something here. I thought the third prong was the ground, and didn't know there was such a thing as a two pronged grounded adapter.
Alexa, Just to clarify, there is no such thing as a "Two-Prong Grounded Adapter". Do you presently have any Plug Adapters on-hand for your trip? You can use your three-pin (grounded) Plug with a Euro two-pin Plug Adapter. The ground pin will simply rest on the outside, and will not be connected. It's a really good idea to pack along at least two of each type of Plug Adapter that you'll need. I prefer to use a grounded Plug Adapter for my Netbook, so have the appropriate model for Italy in my travel kit. If a product was designed for the ground pin to be connected, I prefer to use it that way. Which part of Los Angeles do you live in? Magellan's has store locations in both Santa Barbara and Santa Monica, so no shipping at all would be required. If you wanted to take a drive to one of their stores, it would probably be a good idea to phone first to make sure they have the item in-stock. Happy travels!
You mean now I have to unlearn it?
Thanks so much Ken! Magellan has this one http://www.magellans.com/store/Adaptors___Converters___Plug_AdaptorsEA23MDG so I thought there might be other ones like it. I wasn't sure if I would be able to use my three pronged plug with my the adapter, but thanks for answering that question for me! I'll somewhat close to Santa Monica, so I'll probably make the trip out there sometime before I leave.
Alexa, The Plug Adapter that you provided a link for is NOT the correct grounded Adapter for Italy. That may work for surface mount outlets but WILL NOT work with recessed outlets, and it will NOT provide a ground connection in any case. I'd suggest packing along at least two of the European Ungrounded Plug Adapters (which can be used in some cases with grounded North American Plugs but of course the ground pin wouldn't be connected). If you want to connect your Laptop with a grounded Plug, This Model is the correct one for Italy. It might be prudent to pack along one of the models shown in your link, just so that you have all the bases covered. Cheers!
I used the adapter that Ken shows in his link above and it work wonderfully for all my electronics - including a laptop. The ungrounded 2 prong style.... Frances
@ken Thank you SO much! I know the adapter/converter question is probably asked a million times, I really appreciate you taking the time to answer it, again! I think I will take your advice and just buy the hair appliances over there. I will be there for two months, so it justifies the cost and will help cut back on weight in my luggage. As for the iPhone, I plan on using it in airplane mode while there (so like in iTouch, I guess). I have located a TIM store near my apartment in Verona, and will be getting a basic mobile phone upon arrival.
Thanks again for the concise answer to my specific question.
I am completely clueless when it comes to anything electrical. I looked at the FAQ thread, but have no idea how to tell if my electronics have " built-in 110/220-volt converters". Can someone give me a quick tutorial in what "grounded" means? I will also be staying in an apartment in Italy this September and October. I will have my Nook Tablet, laptop, iPhone, curling iron, & hair straightener (where is that packing lite, thread?!?). What adapters/converters will I need?
So far, I have one of all the above mentioned in my Magellan's cart:)
@Kate, Here's a few suggestions: > Check the Charger of EACH device that you'll be travelling with, looking for the words "Input Voltage". If this says "Input 100-240 VAC, 50/60 Hz" then you'll only need inexpensive Plug Adapters specific to the countries you're visiting (either ungrounded or grounded, depending on the specifics of the appliances you're travelling with). > If the Input Voltage spec's say "115 VAC, 60 Hz", then you will ONLY be able to use those devices in Europe with a Voltage Converter, in addition to Plug Adapters. While many Voltage Converters are equipped with the normal Euro two-pin Plug, you'll need an extra Adapter to allow use with recessed sockets. It's rather an awkward arrangement to use. Also, there are two principles of voltage conversion, and it's important to match the correct type to each appliance. It's highly likely that your Nook, Laptop and iPhone are supplied with "world" Chargers, but it's still wise to verify it. You'll need a powerful magnifying glass to see the spec's on the iPhone Charger, but they are there. However, your Curling Iron and Hair Straightener could be 115 VAC only devices, so this is something you'll need to check. If that's the case, I'd suggest either buying dual-voltage hair appliances from Magellans, or buy new ones when you arrive in Europe as they'll be designed for use there. Another concern is the fact that you'll be travelling with an iPhone. Which cell network are you with, and are you absolutely clear on the issues related to data roaming? The costs can be HUGE (ie: five figures) so this is definitely something you need to look into. Cheers!
