two options for Napels trip....

Leaving Venice at noon on Saturday (May 23rd if it makes a difference) and we're planning on Seeing Pompeii the next day, and then proceed to Rome for 3 more days after that before Flying out on the 28th.

Trying to decide if we should just go right to Naples from Venice (5 hours on the train) and already be there most of the way there on Sunday morning before we tour Pompeii, or Spend Saturday night in Rome (first of 5 nights) and just wake up early and take the train to Naples on Sunday morning.

Going to Naples Saturday lets us eat dinner in Naples, see more of the city, and makes the day trip on sunday easier.
Going to Rome on Saturday makes the train journey 90 minutes shorter on Saturday and allows us to unpack for 5 nights in the same location. It also means we don't have to store our bags at the Naples train station after we check out of the hotel on Sunday morning.

I think a night in Naples is well worth it. Since you are visiting Pompeii, you should also make time to visit the Archaeological museum where the artifacts of Pompeii are on display. Instead of having to store your luggage at the station, you might be able to leave it at your hotel. Take the time after dinner to take a funicular up to Castel Sant Elmo for a sunset spectacular view over the Bay of Naples encompassing the city, Vesuvius, Sorrento and Capri.

yeah, we were hoping to see the museum, but I wasn't sure how long it will take to see Pompeii. We would rather do Pompreii first, and then see the museum later in the day when it's hotter outside

thanks for the advice

Especially if you're worried about the heat (and you are wise to think about it), a night in Naples is better, since it means being able to get to Pompeii when they open at 8.30-9.00. Taking the train from Rome, it doesn't look like you can get to Naples earlier than 8 am on a Sunday and that means getting up really really early.

You'll have an evening in Naples, and time for the arch. museum after Pompeii, maybe even the RS self-guided city walking tour. To save time, store your luggage at the train station on Sunday morning before going to Pompeii - or even store it Saturday when you arrive and just take a small overnight backpack to your hotel in Naples (you can store it for free at Pompeii and the museum).
