Two hour line in Rome to check bags in airport--coming & going? yes?

Hello all, my sister and I travel in two weeks to Naples via Fiumicino Airport in and out of the country from Seattle.
I've read here on this forum that the checked baggage line could take up to two hours....
I've decided to go carry on/backpack/crossbody bag but my sister has a regular suitcase.

Anyone have tips or experience on this re: the wait times in line to check bags?
Wondering if I can convince her to consider carryon only :-)
Thanks

Where did you hear that?

Can’t you get your bags checked thru to Naples when you leave Seattle?

Just flew out of Rome to Seattle (thru London) on BA. We got to the airport early and got into the line about 3 hrs before the flight. The BA agents were not there yet, we were the 2nd group in line so were serviced quickly when they did arrive. We had planned on carrying on our luggage but were told the plane was too full so we had to check it in. We were unable to check in online. Presented our Covid test documents, passports and no problems. Luggage arrived safely. There was a long line of passengers waiting to check in by the time we were done. FYI, there was a long line and wait to check in from Seattle to Italy too, but I think we waited about half an hour.

But I think you'll still have to stand in line to show your passport.

If you are flying from FCO to NAP, you are certainly flying with ITA Airways (the "new" Alitalia), since it's the only airline covering that short segment.
So if you are flying from SEA to FCO with a code share with a sky team airline (e.g. Delta, AirFrance-KLM, ITA Airways) you can ask the check in person in SEA to tag your checked bag all the way to NAP. That way you don't need to worry about the checked luggage until you arrive in Naples. So no need to wait for the bag at the carousel in Rome. You will need however change flights in Rome. The time necessary to do so depends also on where your flight to Rome originates from. For example if you arrive from Paris (Delta and AirFrance both have non stop to CDG from SEA) or Amsterdam (Delta flies to AMS from SEA), then you will be arriving from a EU Schengen country, therefore you don't need to go through passport control (immigration) again. If instead you arrive to Rome from JFK or ATL with Delta or ITA Airways, you will need to clear passport control in Rome. Generally one hour is sufficient, but if you have to clear passport control and several international flights arrive simultaneously, there might be delays. In any case make sure that you ask the check in clerk at Seattle to tag your checked bag all the way to Naples (make sure the tag has NAP in it).

The only reference I have read hear about a two hour wait to check luggage is the luggage storage at Termini. My very limited experience with the luggage check/storage in Termini would support that. Lines are always long. For your trip the only place you would be checking luggage is Seattle. You bags would do directly to Naples. No checking in between.

You have a SINGLE ticket that originates at SEA and ends at NAP, with a stop at FCO?

Just left FCO this morning and checked a bag because of all the goodies I bought. Went pretty quickly, maybe 20-30 minutes. That was at 8 am
Enjoy!

We just flew out of Rome on Wednesday morning (10:30 am flight) and arrived at the airport slightly before 8 am. We had our documents checked and checked our bags in about 10 minutes. We were sitting drinking prosecco in the airport lounge maybe 30 minutes later after we figured out where our gate was and went through passport control.

I posted elsewhere but we got out of our cab at FCO at 7:30 this am, checked in, checked bags, thru security and passport control and at our gate by 8:00 drinking coffee.

Super efficient. Wish I could say the same for our arrival at Dulles. Grrrrrr
