Two extra days in Rome

My husband and I are taking the Venice, Florence, and Rome Rick Steves tour in May. We plan to stay 2 extra days in Rome. We love museums so may return to the Vatican if we don't get enough on the tour and the Borghese Gallery sounds wonderful. Any other suggestions for Rome?

Ostia Antica, if it's not on the RS tour. We explored it for half a day. It's easy to go there using public transportation.

I don't know what you will do in Rome with your tour. There are MANY things to do in Rome. Borghese is great! Plan on 1/2 day for that. Interesting churches include: San Clemente (near St. John Lateran complex - also worth a visit), Santa Prassede and Santa Maria Maggiore, San Luigi French church near Piazza Navona, Sopra Di Minerva near Pantheon. I could go on and on. Campo dei Fiore is an outdoor market and worth visiting around 10 am - 1 pm. EatingItaly walking tour of Trastevere. Capitoline Hill complex. Get a guide book and check out things you are interested in and can get to easily. Rome wasn't built in a day and it certainly can't be visited in a day.

I'm in Rome now (for the 3rd time) and my suggestion is to add more than 2 extra days! Aside from all the historic sights and hundreds of churches (many of which are museums on their own), there are wonderful museums - the Roman National Museum, Palazzo Barberini, Doria Pamphilj to name a very few.

Thanks for those suggestions! We were wondering if we would have too much time in Rome by adding those days. (and we will be are on the May 1-10 tour, not the later one) If anyone else has other suggestions, we're open. We'll be going south after Rome for a few more days to see Naples, Pompeii, Herculaneum and more but that may be another thread.

We need to know what you will be doing in Rome as part of the RS tour before we can recommend additional things to do/see. As for too much time in Rome, I don't think that's possible. I've been six times and still have plenty of things I want to see/do.
