Two days in Rome, does this plan work?

We have 3 nights, so only two full days on Monday and Tuesday in October.

We are staying in the Pantheon area, so the first night we plan to walk to the Pantheon and Piazza Navona,
and perhaps more (some of the Rick Steves walking described in the Italy 2014).
Any dinner suggestions? I'm thinking probably to find something not TOO expensive at Piazza Navona.
With construction, I wonder whether the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain are worth the hike?

The first day(Monday):
Among the four of us, none have a burning desire to spend half a day at the Vatican museum,
so we plan to walk to and visit the nearby Pantheon and St. Peters in the daytime, lunch along the way.
In the evening wander down to Victor Emmanule and the Forum overlook (lighted at night, right?).
Great places to eat near Victor Emmuanule (sp)?

The last day (Tuesday):
Travel (walk down/taxi back?) to the Coliseum area, Forum, Palatine Hill?
From RS 2014 Guidebook I think we can buy a 12 Euro/each ticket at Palatine without much of a line?
Then use that ticket for the Forum and the Coliseum? Or should we try to reserve ahead of time?
Would a guide be worthwhile, or spend that money on food and drink?
Should we stay down in that area for dinner and to view those attractions lighted after dark?
I think so... Eat while we are waiting for darkness, good places nearby?
If it's dark and late, taxi home as we have to catch a train to La Spezia/Monterosso.

It's a short visit to Rome, so we only have time for the main attractions. This trip.

Thanks for your advice!

Trevi is not worth it at this time due to construction. Enjoy Pantheon and Piazza Navona at night. Eat someplace just North of the Pantheon. piazza Navona eateries will be expensive. There are many restaurants around Pantheon. Seek out recommendations to avoid poor ones. You can also see Sopra Di Minerva Church close by. Next day, save St. Peter's Basilica until 3 pm or so. You can't get into Sistine Chapel without tickets. You can see the Basilica without tickets. Much less crowded after 3 pm. Take the #64 bus, I believe, from Largo Argentina area just South of Pantheon to Vatican.
Skip Palatine Hill. Buy combo. Colosseum/Roman Forum tickets at the side entrance to Roman Forum located 1/2 way between Colosseum and VE Monument. Download a RS audioguide for free on Colosseum and Roman Forum. Do Roman Forum first, then take the one way exit just behind Constantine's Basilica to Colosseum. Do Colosseum after 3 pm if you can to avoid crowds. Plan on 1 hour for Roman Forum or so. 1 hour or so for Colosseum.

There are a number of restaurants around Piazza Navona, especially on and near Via del Governo Vecchio. If you want a Piazza Navona experience, have a pricey cocktail at one of the bars in the Piazza.
