My husband and I will be arriving in Rome two days before our RS tour begins and staying in Trastevere (correction: Campo Fiori). What are some things we could do before the South of Italy tour begins? We will arrive October 18. And, also, at the end of the tour we will be staying three extra days, November 1-4, to celebrate our anniversary.
When I did the South Italy tour years ago, i did the same thing and I took a food tour of the Testaccio area which is an interesting and untouristy area of Rome. Well worth the effort to get there and it took up a good part of the day. Certainly no chance of going hungry and included a pasta lunch with wine. There are also food tours of Trastevere but they are more evening tours I believe.
Just wandering through Trastevere is interesting and visiting two of Rome’s oldest churches, Sta. Cecilia and Sta. Maria in Trastevere. Try and go to Sta. Maria.in the evening to see the beautiful mosaics behind the altar as they were meant to be seen. Rick’s Rome guide as a Trastevere you could follow. If you have not been to Rome you should beg, borrow or buy a copy of Rick’s Rome guide for other ideas. The list of things to do is long and without knowing your particular interests it’s hard to give suggestions. Rome does not lack things to do! Enjoy!
You don't have to go far. Stay walkable, either in Trastevere, or across Ponte Sisto to the Jewish Ghetto and Campo de' Fiori. We have stayed 3x at Campo for up to a week at apartments. Next year it'll be two weeks. It's a great neighborhood, the daily fruit & vegetable market on the piazza.
I don't even like to tell people because it's under the radar--especially in the guide books--but Trattoria da Teo in Trastevere is heads above. Just a joint in an alley.
