Twilight Trastevere or Testaccio Super Stroll?

I’m trying to decide between these Eating Italy tours... I did see Rick Steve’s recommends Testaccio over Trastevere in his book but I’ve also seen a lot of great reviews on this forum for the later... looking for help in my decision please!
Grazie :)

We were in Rome in mid-June and did the Trastevere tour, next time we will do the Testaccio tour with Eating Italy. It was a small group, about 10 people and we had a feast. While you can explore Trastevere on your own, I know we would not have gone to many of the places on our own (the vegan bakery and the Suppli place to name two). It was one of the best food tours we went on in Italy. Only two recommendations:

  • Go hungry—it is a lot, a lot of food
  • Go early in your trip. My college-aged girls really wanted to go back to the Suppli place and get cookies to take home on the plane, but we went on the tour on Saturday and neither of those places were open on Sunday.

Have a great trip,
Sandy

I’ve done both, and I’d have to say Twilight Trastavere. The food was generally better on this one, and there were a couple stops I still think about! I don’t really have any negatives. It was a great introduction to Roman cuisine in a lovely neighborhood.

However, if you’re interested in the neighborhood of Testaccio itself, then I found the tour very interesting! It’s a unique neighborhood with its own history and “blue-collar” personality. I thought the tour did an excellent job of explaining the neighborhood, along with its special relationship with food. The food was good too, just a little less than Trastavere tour.

I would agree with Sandy above, you should try to go early in your trip. It’s an invaluable introduction to Roman and Italian cuisine.

Thank you both! I booked the Trastevere tour to cap off our first day in Rome. I totally agree with the suggestion of going at the beginning of the trip so we’ll have time to revisit a place or make use of our tour guides suggestions. I can’t wait!
