Tuxedos in Italy?

As I've mentioned previously, I'm getting married in Italy this September (no family or big reception - just the two of us). I was planning on wearing a traditional tuxedo (bow tie, etc) but now I'm starting to hear from some people online that no one - and I mean no one - wears a tuxedo in Italy, save for waiters in really fancy resturaunts. And that to do so looks very, very odd to the locals. Does anyone know if this is true? It just seems strange that a country known for it's fashion sense would ignore what is the most classic, popular and important fashion staples of the last century. Ultimately, of course, this is our wedding and we'll wear what we damn well feel like. But I'd like to know if I'll be amusing townsfolk while I do it.

I saw a few wedding parties come out of the duomo in Arezzo and I cannot recall if the men were wearing tuxedos, but everyone was very, very nicely dressed. Glad you're of the idea that you will wear what you want for your wedding! Most of the time I would say you should try to blend in with the locals but for your wedding, go with whichever style you like most! It seems to me here in the states a normal tie is becoming more popular than a bow tie for weddings, but do what you want of course!

Bob, I've seen a few weddings in Italy, and based on my observations the groom will more likely be wearing an Armani suit rather than a Tux. I suspect you would be "amusing the locals" by wearing one. You may get some idea of the "fashion sense" for weddings in Italy by having a look at This Website. Congratulations and happy travels!

We like to take bride/groom photos when we happen upon a wedding while traveling in Italy. Our photos from 2009 show that most guys were wearing suits but one had on a tux with a silver vest and long tie and another had a gorgeous champagne-colored satin tux with vest and tie to match. Last year, we only got two wedding shots: one of the bride only and in the other the guys were wearing kilts!

And what about the most important opinion - the bride's? :-)
