Tuscany Without a Vehicle

Hi all,

Before you jump in and say you need a car, I’m not comfortable driving in foreign countries. Italy especially with all its parking bans and fine horror stories.

Kind of want to be in the country rather than in Florence. I thought San Gimignano, but I guess there is no train.

Would Siena make sense as a base?

I would fly into Rome. Stay one night. Travel to Tuscany and spend 4 or 5 nights and then back to Rome to overnight before returning home.

Trying to avoid Covid also.

Am I living in a pipe dream with this?

I like well located hotels with character. But don’t have a champagne budget. I’m not looking for hostels either.

Where in Tuscany specifically would you like to go? Some places you need a car, some you don't. Maybe make a list of towns that interest you and plug them into rome2rio.com to see how you'd get there and if a car is the only option you can cross it out and narrow down your itinerary that way.

Also, when you first arrive in Rome you could take a train directly to Florence, no need to spend the first night in Rome. Then you could spend the last night in Rome if you're flying out from there.

Consult a guide book to find out which towns have bus as well as train service, and which are well connected to each other. Siena is a possibility. But to be in a rural, small village environment with ease of travel, you do need to drive for that experience.

I have stayed in Tuscany numerous times without a car, and have been able to go everywhere I have wanted by taking the train or a bus. Of course it may take longer, but to me it is far less stressful, when I can sit back, relax and let somebody else do the driving.

Here is a partial list of towns from Siena by public transport. Check with your lodging for others.

These towns are easily accessible by bus and train. Some towns I've combined with others. (B=bus, T=train)

Siena-Colle di Val d'Elsa ( B 30m)-San Gimignano (B 35m)-Siena (T 1H05m)

Siena-Montereggioni (B 18m)-Castellina in Chianti (B 30m)

Siena-Radda in Chianti (B 55m)

Siena-Buonconvento (T 28m)-Monteroni d'Arbia
(T 12m)-Siena

Siena-Rapolano Terme (T 37m)-Asciano Mont Oliveto (T 10m)-Siena (T 26m)

Siena-Sinalunga (T 53m)

Siena-San Quirico d' Orcia (B 50m)

Siena-Pienza ( B 1H05m)

Siena-Certaldo (T 39m)
.
Even if you decide on 1 hilltown a day, there's plenty to do. Look at the towns to see what interest you.
Be sure to check return times by bus carefully.

KB - Yes I have stayed in Florence as well as many other towns in Tuscany and Umbria and all over Italy actually, all without a car. No thanks!

When do you plan to travel? The reason I ask has to do with bus schedules. If you plan to travel during Italian school holiday breaks (or, typically, on a Sunday), bus service will be less frequent-so be sure to check the schedules closely. Enjoy your trip!

@Den The first week of September, which is when all the kids go back to school where I live. It’s easy to get vacation time then as no one with kids goes on vacation the first week of school.
