Tuscany wine tasting

Hi. I work in a wine tasting room for a winery in California. People come and go all day.....no reservations needed. Will I need reservations to taste and tour wineries in Tuscany? Do I have to go with a Tour Group or can we just drive ourselves and pop into wineries of our choice? Please advise. Grazie. Dino Rovera…..

It has been about 4 years since we've been wine tasting in Italy, more than a dozen since we wine tasted in Tuscany (Montepulciano), but it was pretty laid back at the time. We just pulled off the road into small wineries (both the wineries and the vineyards are much smaller than we have here in California). Typically, they didn't charge with the expectation you will buy; which we always did, knowing it would be wine we could enjoy in the evening. Also, let me recommend the town of San Gimiagno as you home base; its a lovely towered medieval space and we had the best night with other travelers drinking the wine of the agriturismo where we stayed just outside of town. The wine was good, the companionship unforgettable and the view of the village on the hilltop reminded us why we love Tuscany.
