Hi there - My husband and I will be traveling by car from the Amalfi Coast to Cinque Terre (don't worry we're dropping our car off outside CT and training in for the rest of our trip) and would like to spend 2 nights somewhere in the Tuscany region. Does anyone have suggestions on a city to stay in? We would love to rent bikes and explore the region and possible take a day trip somewhere. Any thoughts or suggestions would be wonderful! I'd look close by San Gimignano and Certaldo--in the rolling hills outside of either city. Poggibonsi's about 5 miles away, and it's easy to get to Siena and Volterra from there. Booking.com has plenty of places, as virtually every farm in the region has rooms and/or apartments priced reasonably as a source of secondary income.
Bicycles? Unless you're an experienced road racer, forget it. The hills may not be mountains, but they're not especially enjoyable to climb on a bicycle.
Have you checked the distances between the Amalfi Coast and Cinque Terre? It's a pretty major trip that most would make by fast train (out of Naples).
