I am planning a trip to Tuscany/Umbria for eight people next year. Ideally we'd love not to have to rent a car, but is that realistic? We are interested in renting a villa and I've found a few that list bus stops nearby (rentvillas.com). But I curious to know if anyone has been successful in using only public transportation. Thanks!
Debbie
Debbie, we are doing Tuscany/Umbria by public transport in May. You would definitely see more with a car, but i think it can done well by public transport. We are staying 4 nights in Perugia and 4 nights in Siena, taking a few day trips from each, mostly by bus. We are staying at hotels in each town, not renting villas. I will let you how it goes, but you'll probably have to send me a message sometime after May 15th as a reminder.
Thanks David! I will be in touch in mid-May to follow up. Cheers, Debbie.
We've done Tuscany/Umbria by public transportation. I think you'd have better luck being in or very close to a town that's a good transportation hub. If you're out in the country in a villa, there could very well be a bus stop nearby but it might only go to a small town. It might be very time-consuming to get to the places you want to see. It really depends how much sightseeing you want to do -- or whether you just want to hunker down in a villa with a swimming pool and prepare your own meals.
Not that I've tried to see this area by public transportation (except for train trips connecting major destinations), but I wouldn't think of roaming Tuscany/Umbria without a car. A terrific and scenic region to wander aimlessly and on your own schedule and at your own pace.
If you look at bus schedules (try googling SITA Toscana or something to that effect) you'll see that their schedules are geared towards morning commutes into larger towns and evening schedules leaving towns. In between, there's not much. In my opinion, you need a car to see all but the largest destinations.
