Tuscany, Umbria, Orvieto in October 2022

We are planning a trip to Florence, Tuscany and Rome in October. We plan to spend 4 to 5 days in Tuscany, thinking of Umbria, Orvieto or other areas. We will have a rental car and would love to relax, tour the area, enjoy several vineyards and wineries and see the quaint villages. We want to visit Montepulciano, Chianti, Sienna, Orvieto and other areas recommended.

Where would be a good home base to stay for 4 to 5 nights? We love the idea of staying in a castle hotel and have found several that look wonderful.

Pienza is a perfect for your goals. I would not, however, venture into Umbria. Save it for another trip as it is worth a week on its own.

We did day trips to Montepulciano, Montalcino, san Gimignano and Siena very easily from Pienza.

Check out Castello di Petroia Relais in Gubbio. We stayed there for 2 nights last week. Beautiful grounds, easy drive everywhere and amazing staff. I would return in a heartbeat. :)
