Tuscany/Umbria itinerary help

I am sketching out a 2 week trip in Italy next July with my wife and 2 teenage daughters. For a the Tuscany/Umbria portion of the trip we are planning to rent a car. Right now I am thinking that after 2 days of relaxation in the Cinque Terre, we will rent a car in La Spezia and drive to Sienna with stops along the way in Pisa and San Gimignano. We want to spend a night in Sienna, and then spend the next day driving through the Tuscan countryside. I would like to spend the next night at an agriturismo somewhere between Sienna and Orvieto, especially one with one of those long outdoor farm meals I keep reading about. The next morning, we will turn in our car in Orvieto and continue on to Rome by train.

Does this itinerary seem realistic or am I trying to pack too much into 2 days with a car? Are there any good agriturismo recommendations near Orvieto and do these places accept single-night visitors? Thanks in advance for any help...it's a little overwhelming!

Is there a reason to spend two nights in two different locations? I think you'd be better off staying in one place both nights. You could stay either in Siena or in an agriturismo. Loading all your luggage in and out of the car is a lot of effort, especially in Siena, where you are likely to have to park some distance from your hotel. (They let you bring your car in to pick up and drop off luggage only.)

Siena is also worth spending a full day at least.

There's a lot to see in Tuscany and Umbria, and with only two days you will not get to see very much of it, so pick one or two highlights and do them from a single base.

To answer your second question: If you decide to stay outside of Orvieto, check out Locanda Rosati, a more-than-wonderful agriturismo. Gracious host, beautiful property, comfortable rooms, and fun, interesting, and delicious dinners.

Can you find an extra day somehow ?
Day 1 To Siena (2 nts) via Pisa or Lucca
Day 2 (am) Siena sights
Day 2 (pm) San Gimignano
Day 3 To Orvieto (1 nt) via Montepulciano
Day 4 To Rome

I would suggest visiting Siena as a day trip since it's not very automobile friendly for an overnight. I stayed in places where you could not even drive your car to drop your luggage off, but instead had to haul it up a long hill. I suggest you pick one place in the countryside to stay, and visit Siena on a day trip from there

These are great suggestions and I am rethinking my plan already. I am looking at the Agriturismo Marciano outside of Siena to use as a base for 2 or 3 nights and then making trips to the countryside from there, then taking the train from Siena directly to Rome. That way we can visit Pisa, maybe Voltera and San Gimignano on the way there, spend a relaxed day in Siena, and another day in the Montelpuciano/Pienza area.
