Hi, we'll be leaving Tuscany for FCO. In Tuscany, we will have a car. Should we drive all the way or drop the car somewhere and take trains to FCO. Car seems easier than car plus 2 trains.
If we drop car, what are good towns to drop and hop on train?
Where in Tuscany?
Orvieto is a convenient drop off, or Chiusi
Also what time is your flight? I’d want to be closer to FCO that am if you have morning flight
If you are going to the airport, drop it at the airport. Easy to do. Great signage. Follow the arrows. You can actually skirt the Rome metro area and drive directly to the airport. Why consider any other option???
If you drop it in another town, you will have to take the train to Rome and change to the train to the airport. It will take double if not more of your time. This is a no-brainer.
What time in the departure? And how much time do you feel comfortable driving before the drop-off?
As others pointed out, it's very easy to just drop your rental car off at FCO -- the signage is quite good and it's fairly easy. However, I always go to Rome the night before my flight and drop my rental car off at the train station (Stazione Termini) -- IF you have a GPS (and someone else who can help navigate), getting into Rome and dropping off at Termini is doable. After dropping off my rental car I take a cab to my hotel (I've found good deals the past two times including this coming August in the Monti area of Rome, between Termini and the Colosseum -- even walkable from Termini if you don't have much luggage.). The reason I do this is that I love having a final night in Rome -- dinner at a nice Roman restaurant (last time it was Tavernelle, in the same area as the hotel, wonderful roman establishment), walking around rome at night, getting a last gelato at Giollitti's, etc. I then take a cab to FCO in the morning to catch my flight back to the U.S.
If you need to drive on the same day as your flight, then, yes, drive straight to FCO. But I would not drop off the car at FCO and stay in an airport hotel where there is nothing to do, when you can have a great final night in one of the greatest cities in the world!
Thanks all. Flight is about 6 PM. Not sure where we'll be in Tuscany that last night. Based on the input, it sounds like the car is the way to go. If we have the time, is there any "must do" stop on the way to FCO?
Great wind down stop on the way, 45 min. to FCO. The gardens are beautiful. Pictures do not do it justice.
With a 6pm departure you could come from just about anywhere in Tuscany and have a leisurely day.
I thought Pitigliano was amazing, but it's a bit of a diversion off the coastal road. You could stop at the Tarot Garden near Capalbio.
Take care with baggage in the trunk.
6 pm is an interesting departure time. As mentioned, it will be easy to get to FCO from Tuscany. We left our agriturismo near Greve about 8:00 in the morning and arrived at FCO around 2:00, including a stop for lunch. We did take the Autostrada.
Unless you leave super early, don't dawdle too much driving to FCO. You'll have to return your car and be at the terminal at least 2 hours before departure, preferably 3.
