Hi all, We are travelling through tuscany this fall and are undecided where to stop for our last leg, 5 nights. Sienna/Chianti region, or Montepulciano? Any thoughts?
Lynn, Stay close to the places you want to visit. This may help http://www.slowtrav.com/italy/tuscany/hs_planning.htm
For what it's worth, we liked Montepulciano much better than Siena....Montepulciano is up on a hill with incredible views, smaller, charming, friendly and not crowded when we were there in July '08....Siena, for us, was dark, dirty, not charming, not friendly, clautrophobic, and very crowded.
Will you have a car? We spent 5 nights in Siena in March, 2009 and loved it. We did not have a car and our hotel was convenient to the bus. Old town Siena is pretty much a pedestrian town with some great restaurants and easy access to the bus for day trips if that's in your plans. There are hotels outside the old town with parking. Have not been to Montepulciano so cannot compare.
Another vote for Montepulciano. Five nights in Siena would be way too many for me[INVALID]glad I visited Siena but did not love it. You could split the time and add Piensa to the plan[INVALID]wonderful Tuscan town.
