Tuscany/Siena

Arriving in Siena on Friday, June 20 (by bus) and leaving on Tuesday, June 24 and trying to plan our time. We (travelling with 2 teenage boys) will be staying outside of Siena and we have a car. We will drop it off in La Spezia on Tuesday and continue to CT by train. Need some advice on how to plan our time in the area. We plan on spending one day in Assisi. I know Assisi is a drive but our son was confirmed last year and St. Francis was his confirmation name and he wants to go. Thought about stopping at San Gimignano on the way to La Spezia. Interested in Sant'Antimo and visiting a winery or 2. Would also appreciate dining options. Thanks!

Assisi is not far from Siena. Less than 2 hour drive even if you observe all the speed limits (and if you do, you'll be the only one to do so). You can probably add Perugia or Gubbio or Spello to Assisi.
Volterra, Monteriggioni, Certaldo, Colle Val D'Elsa, Montepulciano, Pienza, San Quirico, Castellina in Chianti are more options in the area.

San Gimingano is quite compact and can be seen in a few hours, if that's all the time you have. To help plan your driving, see the driving times overview on p. 675 of Rick Steves' Italy book and also try www.viamichelin.com for directions. Of course, you'll still need a detailed regional driving map.
