Tuscany itinerary ideas

I'm looking for ideas how to spend 3 days in in Tuscany, tough problem, I know. I'll be hopping off an RS tour in Florence in March and have some time before heading to Venice to depart home. I do not plan to drive so public transport will be in my plans.

One thought right now is to take a bus or train from Florence to Siena. Spend two nights there to tour the town and get a day tour for some wine tasting and countryside sites. Then head to Assisi and spend a night. Finally to Venice then home.

The other thought is to just stay in Sienna as a base and do more touring from there.

Appreciate suggestions or tips. Grazie.

Assisi is lovely, but the 8:04 AM departure from Siena doesn't get you to Assisi until 12:45 PM. The morning trains from Assisi on to Venice take over 4 hours, though there are some afternoon options that run about 3 hr. 15 min.

Then again, the straight shot from Siena to Venice takes about 6 hours, so maybe the extra hour or two isn't a big deal.

I'll be on the Heart of Italy tour. Two nights in Volterra, a stop in Lucca, then off to the Cinque Terra before heading to Florence. That's why I thought of heading to Siena, and I've long wanted to visit Assisi though more Umbria I guess.
