Thanks all .. we are reducing our moves. We want to our last 3 nights in either Montalcino or Motepulciano? We are already doing 4 nights in Sienna. Thoughts?
I could use advise. We are flying in and out of Rome. We have 11 nights and so far have booked 3 in Cinque Terre. I'm thinking.... Rome to Assisi (2 nights)... to Sienna (2 nights) to Cinque Terre (3 nights) to Montapulciano (or Montalcino). We are driving the entire time. Any thoughts? 4 adults 45 to 65. We have already done Florence.
The Cinque Terre has never pulled me in. If it is a place you must visit, I'd spend the rest of the time in one base. Montepulciano is a good spot, you can hit a host of places within an hour or so from there (Assisi, Spello and Trevi a little further but not by much). I can't name specific roads, but to the west and roundabouts the driving is gorgeous. I don't know when you are going but aim for a rental.
Way too much moving around.
Arrive Rome, train to CT. 3 nites.
Rent car in La Spezia travel to Tuscany. Spend 7 nites here.
Your furthest location, Assisi at 1 1/2 hours. The rest are under an hour.
Day 11 drive to Rome, drop car at airport. Maybe visit Villa d'Este on the way.
I preferred Montepulciano but both are nice.
I've stayed in both Montalcino and Montepulciano. Either would be a good choice for relaxation and day trips. The main difference is that Montalcino is relatively flat while Montepulciano is a true hill town (i.e. steep uphill walk from bottom to top). Although most streets in both towns are within ZTLs, I found parking a little easier in Montalcino.
