Tuscany in November

My husband and I are going to Tuscany to celebrate our 10th anniversary. We were there for our honeymoon, so we want to revisit some of the same places and add some new spots to our list.

We're flying in/out of Milan and want to take a train to our first stop and then pick up a car for the second half of the trip.

We'd like to stay in one city for 3 nights (either Lucca or Florence) and then head out to the countryside and stay somewhere quiet, romantic and traditionally Tuscan. From there we want to drive to visit some of the small hill towns, a winery and maybe do a day of hiking. What suggestions do you have for a place to stay in the countryside? Hotels and/or agriturismos suggestions would be much appreciated.

Any other suggestions for Tuscany in November? Thank you!

I really LOVE Lucca !!! There are wonderful hotels inside the walled area and some really elegant Villas in the areas outside.
I have not ever rented a car in Italy - so I can't be much help about where to drive.
Hope some others on these threads can give you more info - but your trip sounds wonderful.
I saw so many places on the Village Italy tour, so maybe looking at their itinerary may give you some ideas.
Another favorite place we stayed for 2 nights was Loro Ciuffenna is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Arezzo in the Italian region Tuscany, located about 40 kilometres (25 mi) southeast of Florence. I could have stayed there longer - it was so relaxing.

The weather in November is not ideal. Early november is often very rainy (the rainiest time of the year in fact), late Nov is often getting cold already (low 50s during the day, 30s/40s at night). Snow tires or chains are required on many Tuscan roads, therefore you must make sure the rental company provides them. In that type of weather, I don't recommend to stay in an agriturismo. Besides being boring, you run the risk of being stuck in muddy driveways. I would stick to cities, such as Florence, which will offer plenty of things to see and do indoor, if the weather is not cooperative. If you want to rent a car to visit smaller towns, try to stay in a bigger town, rather than in the fields. Siena would be an excellent choice, just make sure you choose a hotel outside the ZTL (limited traffic zone) which has parking. That way you have something to do, and restaurants to go to in the evening, without having to drive in potentially nasty weather. From Florence you can also visit several towns without need of a car (Lucca, Pisa, Arezzo, Pistoia, Siena itself)

We just stayed at a wonderful place right outside Montepulciano, Relais San Bruno. It was very romantic and there is a lot to see in the area. The best part of our 10 day trip. We also stayed in Siena at a hotel in the ZLT zone and it wasn’t a problem parking in their lot.

November is a great time to visit 1 of the 2 truffle festivals in the area (there are probably more in the smaller villages also.
