Going to London at the beginning of November and want to travel to the Tuscany area for around 9 or 10 days. Would love to see Florence, Pisa and perhaps Cinq Terra. Should we stay in Florence and use the train to do day trips. Or should we stay somewhere central like Montecatini Terme and do day trips from there. Don't really want to rent a car if I can avoid it. Also thought about a 2 nights in Venice and then train to Florence. Really confused by all the possibilities..... Thank you for any suggestions.
You can certainly see Tuscany without a car, but I think you'll miss some wonderful experiences without one. There are places not served by train and busses. You could take tours, but you give up the freedom to explore at your own pace.
Some of our fondest memories of our stay were the times we started the day with only a sketch of our itinerary. One day we knew we wanted to end up at vespers celebrated in Gregorian chant at the abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore. We set out from our agriturismo just north of Greve and wandered south down country roads. We stopped at Radda and had a wonderful time exploring the church and the shops. We continued down the lovely SR222, making little side trips on local roads. We saw areas of Tuscany you just can't see from a train or bus. We also had a wonderful drive one day from Greve to San Gimignano and Volterra. The sunset was spectacular at Volterra. We had plan to head home earlier, but by having a car, we were able to stay as long as we wanted. Volterra looked magical in twilight.
I would suggest renting a car, staying in an agriturismo and use it as a base for day trips. I'd also check into CT in November. My understanding is it can be stormy and not as much (restaurants, etc.) are open during the off season.
We like to spend a long weekend in Florence, and then move south 30 miles to an agriturismo. So many of the great hilltowns are not served by railroads, and buses are a hassle. It's a region best served by travel in a rental car. Roads are well paved and easy to drive=--but just a little crooked.
We have found the agriturismos will give you a more authentic travel experience than staying in the big cities.
Venezia in November, yes (see recent post about that) but skip the Cinque Terre unless you find yourself in a period of unseasonably good weather. With 10 nights (9 days) I would devote 3 or 4 nights to Venezia then the remainder to a base in Tuscany. You can base in Firenze and day trip by bus and train.
In November your best bet is to follow Laurel's advice.
3 or 4 nights in Venezia (from where you can also visit Padova, Murano/Burano, and possibly Verona (one hour away, if you add a night)
Then 4 or 5 in Florence, from which you can visit several Tuscan towns by train or bus.
I don't recommend to go to the 5 Terre in November. Also the countryside is not at its best that time of the year. I wouldn't stay in a farmhouse in winter for sure. That will definitely require a rental car, and snow tires are mandatory in many Tuscan roads between November and April, so that could be an extra cost. Stay in cities in winter. Even if the weather is bad, there is plenty to do indoor in a city like Florence or Venice.
Fly into either Venice or Pisa.
Easyjet has many flights a day from London Gatwick. Flights to both slightly over 2 hours.
I would use Venice as my starting point, as Laurel said 3-4 days, then the remainder in Florence. Great train and bus connections from there.
For tours into the Tuscan countryside, use one of these.
