My husband and I will be traveling to Tuscany in late January/ February does anyone have suggestions about what to pack and what to expect that time of the year? We will be staying in the spa town of Montecatini and will have a car.
Are you staying for the whole month, longer...? Traveling around at all? It's not generally bitterly cold, and snow (if any) tends to stay at higher elevations for the most part. It's more of a wet-catch-a-chill cold than dry or brutally snowy, and the precipitation is generally rain as opposed to snow. Lots of rain. At night the temperatures tend to linger around the freezing point but in the daytime it's usually pretty mild; anywhere between 40-60 degrees F (usually in the 50s), with January usually being the colder of the 2 months. The thermal pools, of course, keep their temperatures but you probably knew that. It's great that you have a car, because I would say layers are a Must! I'd bring a fairly heavy waterproof coat for wet weather and colder nights and a mild-weather but still rainproof jacket, and a good pair of boots to keep you dry (or use being there as an excuse to go boot shopping). Sweaters, pants, and some t-shirts underneath for when you get warm, but you won't be needing shorts or tank tops or anything unless you're traveling elsewhere. You probably want a strong umbrella too! Hopefully that helped somewhat. It sounds like you have an excellent trip planned!
