Tuscany...go on a Caftour or explore on our own?

We will be in Florence for slightly over three days (arriving at 2pm) and want to see everything! We want to set aside part of one day to get out just for a taste of the hilltowns, without renting a car.

We are considering a Caftour described as follows:
Excursion in the heart of the Chianti Classico with dinner
All the enchantment of the Chianti - Wine tasting in a castle - Visit the scented vineyards in the provinces of Florence and Siena - Pop into the Medieval villages of Greve, Castellina, after which relish the delights of a typical Chianti dinner in San Donato in Poggio. The cost of this tour is approximately $110/person and is about 8 hours.

OR we would just take a bus in the early afternoon, probably to Lucca, and explore on our own and have dinner.

Any suggestions? Has anyone done this Caftour? What do you think would be the best use of our limited time?

Lucca isn't a hill town. It's a valley town, flat as a pancake. Great place, but not a hill town with an ancient wall. The Lucca wall is more modern.

One thing tours are good at is getting you to the destination smoothly. With just part of one day for the excursion, I wouldn't risk trying to do it myself for fear we'd lose a lot of time just finding our way.

$110/person for 8 hours sounds like a good deal for me, but it will be nice if someone can chime in with experience on this tour.

Jamie,

I don't have any information on Caftours, but another option you could consider would be the local Guides listed in the Italy guidebook. These would undoubtedly be more expensive but would provide a more "personal" tour.

Happy travels!

When time is at a premium a guided tour can be a great option. CAF is a reputable tour company and it sounds like a lovely day.

Thanks so much for the feedback and for the heads up about Lucca not being a hill town. I am sure it is beautiful but want to get into the hills. We are going to do the tour...I will follow up afterward and let you know how it was. I think it is going to be wonderful!
