Going to Italy in March with my friend and our two 14 yr old daughters. Any thoughts on where to stay while in Tuscany? Trying to decide between Siena to be able to walk around in the evening (are days shorter then?) or a farmhouse setting. Late March but may be cold. Thanks!
March 20 is the day of the Vernal Equinox. There will be approximately 12 hour of sunlight in Italy. After a big Tuscan dinner in Siena I would rather eat gelato while waddling back to the hotel, than to get in a car and drive, possibly in the rain to the farmhouse. For me, the advantage of the farmhouse is that it would be a great place to just hang out and walk the trails, for a day of being non-tourists, followed by a home cooked dinner of groceries bought that day in the local village.
If it were summer I'd recommend staying at an agriturismo to escape the crowds and the heat of the city. And your teens would love to laze at a pool. But at that time of year I think you'd enjoy an evening in Siena much more.
Debbie, Siena is my suggestion. Try to read " Seven seasons in Tuscany " by Robert Rodi, before your trip. This is a unique look into Sienese culture.
Your daughters will have much more to do in Siena than in the countryside, especially if the weather is rainy. Happy travels.
Debbie, we love the Agritourisimos in Tuscany and Umbria, but in March, Siena would be your best choice. Besides; it is magical at night. Both you and your daughters will love it. PS Don't do any drving in Sienna or Florence unless you know and understand where and what a ZTL is!
