My wife & I are not real big museum people. We do love exploring the country side and seeing the sights.
We have a full day in Florence or Assisi to explore the surround area. We are thinking about renting a car for a day and just exploring the surrounding area. Any thoughts you might have would be appreciated.

Rather than deal with expensive car rental and driving I’d just do one of the day trips offered by many companies

From Assisi: visit Spello which you see across the valley. Rent a car. Nearby to Spello also visit Bevagna and Montefalco. A nice view of Umbria!
From Florence for a day in Tuscany:Rent a car.
Visit Siena and the Chianti villages nearby- Radda, Castellina, Gaiole, Panzano .
