Tuscany

We are flying to Rome the end of March and plan to stay there for 3 nights, renting a car when we leave and driving to Cortona so we can see sights along the way. We are rentinf a villa in Cortona for 9 day's and want to do day trips, What should we see and do? We had thought that we would then drive to Florance again to see sight's stay there for 3 day's and then drive on the Venice and turn the car in. I don't know if that is a good plan or weather we should take the trains. Is there enough to see in between to warrent keeping a car all this time? I don't want to miss anything!!

Many people try to avoid driving around ROme and will train to either Orvieto or Chiusi and pick up the car there. You will need the car for your stay in the villa, it will make getting around easier. there are several restricted travel zones in Florence that are monitored by automated cameras. Every time you pass by the camera it generates an expensive ticket. As a result many folks won't drive in Florence. Opting to drop the car outside and train or bus in or drop at the Florence airport. You won't need the car in Florence and taking the train to Venice is the easiest way to get there.

Picking up a car in Rome, even to drive out of Rome is usually a major headache. The train to Chiusi is a good solution. Pick up a car there and drive to Cortona. When you're through in the Cortona area, turn the car in there or go back to Chiusi and turn it in and take the train to Florence and then on to Venice. I think a car in Florence or Venice is totally unnecessary--IMO.
