Flying to Milan and taking train to Cinque Terre. After Cinque Terre going to Tuscany for six days and want to rent a car. Any suggestions on where to pick up a car? We need to be in Lake come to join a tour/river cruise. Need a convenient place to drop off car and get a train to Lake Come. We were thing about Florence but read that it is difficult to drive in Florence. Our plan was to take a train from Florence to Lake Coco. Milan, Cinque Terre, Tuscany and Florence is our planned itinerary. Any thoughts or suggestions.
Are you talking about Lake Como when you write Lake Come and Lake Coco?
From the CT, take the train to Florence. From the train station, take a taxi to the airport car rental lot. NOTE: This is NOT at the airport, so make sure your driver knows it's the car rental place, not the airport. Cost of taxi is about 20 euros. It is very easy to leave from there to hit the countryside without going into the city. Return the car to the same place and taxi back to the train station for a train to Milan.
You can also get a car in La Spezia.
I agree with the Florence airport rental- it’s what we did when we did a week in Val D’Orcia and it’s completely outside of the city- you would have to do a lot wrong to suddenly find yourself in the middle of Florence. We were first time drivers in Europe and had absolutely no problem going from there. To maximize your time, maybe find a company that will allow you to pick up in La Spezia and drop off at Florence airport? Look see which companies will make it easy to drop off in a different location (although be very careful which company you go through- some are fantastic and others notoriously awful- sometimes 10 or 15 extra bucks a day is worth more than it’s weight in gold when it comes to these car rental companies), and also check business hours/days (that also made the difference for us- sometimes some locations of certain companies are only open half the day on Saturday or closed on Sunday, etc.). It can be a little pricier to drop off in a different location, but I remember it wasn’t anything ridiculous when we picked up in Florence and dropped off in Rome...and the money was worth the extra timed we gained from it too :)
