Tuscany (Chianti) questions—olive oil tastings, impromptu wine tastings

My understanding is that your best bet is to reserve wine tastings, but I am hoping for a bit more spontaneity during the Chianti leg of our trip in May. Are there wineries that allow drop-ins?

Also, I’d love to do an olive oil tasting. Has anyone done one in the Chianti region (that you would recommend)?

We’re staying at an agriturismo near Greve. The agriturismo offers a cooking class (which we’re taking) but doesn’t mention offering tasting events. We plan to visit some of the small towns nearby (Radda, Castellina, etc.)

This one is very good, if you’re planning on doing an evening meal, go with the lite lunch. For the best meal use the 3hour program.

My favorite in the area is Villa Vignmaggio, however their cellar may still be under restoration. I believe you can taste their products in their shop in Greve.

Radda is where the wine consortium is located. Tasting of wines from the area can be done there.

Castellina is a quintessential Tuscan Hill Town.
Make sure you take pics. Food is good.

We did not find much flexibility with the better wineries. All required reservations with a fee and were strict about it. If you drive the country side you will see some road side tasting stands that are walk up. We spend a week in Tuscany visiting wineries. We had a list of the ten or so that we really wanted to visit so we had reservations set up one in the am and another in pm for five days. We thought we might be able to do a couple more drop ins around our reservations. Not much luck. Often many of the better wineries will have a kitchen associated with them and they will offer multi course lunch/dinner with wine pairing. They are expensive but they are so good. We did a couple. There is nothing better than sitting on a veranda of an old castle overlooking the vines and enjoying their wines matched to their food. Don't expect it to be quick -- a couple, three hours was average. And do be careful about the quantity of wine your consume if driving when you have lunch or dinner.

We stayed in an agriturismo about 20 minutes from Florence.
