Tuscany bus schedule between hill towns???

I have searched and searched for bus time tables in Tuscany.

I have a couple of dilemmas to factor in as well, so any advice is welcomed!

We will be coming in by train from Vernazza in route (eventually to Siena). We will be traveling on Aug 15, which is Assumption Day and a National Italian holiday. I wanted to stay over in Volterra- which we would reach 30 min by bus after getting off at the train station.

From Volterra I wanted to take the bus to San G in route to Siena.

My questions are:

Does anyone know a good website for viewing the bus time tables in the Volterra-San G-Siena area?

Do the buses even run on Assumption day??

Thanks!

According to the Rick Steves book that I have, "There is virtually no bus service in or out of Volterra on Sundays and holidays."

http://www.sitabus.it/wps/portal

Use the above link to check out bus schedules in Italy. It's in Italian (I have yet to find an English version). However, if you play with it enough, you may be able to find what you are looking for.

Hopefully someone else may be able to supply more assistance.

Looked up Vernazza to Volterra on the Trenitalia website for 15 August.

Departure out of Vernazza at 06:36 am. Arrival at Volterra-Saline-Pomarance at 11:01 am with 2 station changes. The next train does not leave until 1:30 pm and does not arrive until 6:45pm. That train requires 3 station changes.

Not sure where the train station is. Have you contacted anywhere to stay in Volterra? If you have/do, they may be able to provide more information on how to get where you are going for the day in question.

Volterra and San Gimignano do not have train stations. You reach them by bus or car. Even on the Trenitalia train schedule, it shows a connecting bus. The Trenitalia schedule to Volterra is quite limited as there are only two connecting buses in a day. It looks like there are runs on 8/15.

From Volterra to San G., I suspect that you have to take a bus to Poggibonsi and transfer to a bus to San G. I believe that www.trainspa.it makes these runs but their bus runs are listed by stop and not town. You'll have to open each run to see which one you want. www.sangimignano.net as well as Trainspa have bus runs from San G. to Siena.

Bus schedules for the part of Tuscany around Volterra can be found at www.cpt.pisa.it, but the website is in italian. If you click on the Percorsi e orari icon and then the Servizio extraurbano icon, you can scroll down a list of buses and view schedules. Only buses marked FS at the top of the schedule operate on holidays. If there is also a Servizio urbano Volterra icon, that would be your best bet for bus schedules from the train station.
