Tuscany Base in September

Looking for suggestions on a base, or two for 4-6 days in Tuscany. Will be renting a car once arriving via plan at either FCO or possibly Florence/Milan. We can get a direct flight from Rome that arrives early morning so thinking this is likely our best option right now. We are not afraid of going hard once arriving the first day as we will slow down once settled. In the past we have been to Italy and spent time in Cinque Terra, Pisa, Florence and Rome. We absolutely loved Florence so will return for at least one night, maybe two. We stayed AirBnB that trip in the middle of it all. On a previous trip to the Loire Valley we stayed in the small town of Amboise and just loved the idea of the quaint peaceful landing spot at night that still had something to offer when we decided to venture out on our feet in the evening after exploring else where during the day. What areas should we see in Tuscany if we have between 4-6 days in Tuscany/Florence? Where are good places to stay that aren't necessarily hotels?

I used 2 bases. Siena then saw Pienza, montepulciano and san Gimigano all by bus. Picked up a car for second base Orvieto, seeing Cortona, chiusi, and civita di b. Etc. I also recom as n option adjacent Umbria much like Tuscany with Assisi as a base to see Deruta etc.

Two suggestions, Tuscany = Siena, and Umbria = Montefalco

We spent 7 nights in Montepulciano, and enjoyed it very much indeed. (Don't buy train tickets at the T. I. - it's a scam.) If you visit Siena from there, take the bus or train, as parking can be difficult to impossible. We looked for parking for an hour, then decided to visit Volterra instead, and had no problem parking there.

Drive from FCO to Orvieto. Around 1 1/2 hrs. Stay here for 2 nites.

Lovely property, wide range of breakfast items. Lovely hostess.

Plenty of places other than Orvieto to visit in this area.

Another 1 1/2 hrs will get you here.

Very centrally located to see all of Tuscany and parts of Umbria.
While not in town, but rather at the top of a small mount, vistas over the countryside are amazing, there are plenty of dining establishments within 10-15 minutes. Closest town is about a mile and a half.

It's still one of my favorite places in Tuscany.
