Tuscany Accomodation w/ Florence Day Trip

Where would be a good place to stay in Tuscany that's close enough to day-trip into Florence? We will have two days/three nights in Tuscany so we ideally want to spend one day to hit the highlights in Florence on a day trip and one day just to relax.

We've thought about Siena, but would really like to stay at an agriturismo or countryside B&B, so any specific recommendations for these type places would be appreciated. Also, are there any agriturismo's in this that are easily reachable by public transportation? Because we probably won't have a car.

Thanks!

You could pick a small town on the 222 like Greve, Panzano, etc. and probably be able to catch a bus to Florence for the day. I think you can find something that is within walking distance of a bus stop with a little research. Or the owner of the agriturismo will probably give you a ride to the bus stop, etc.

One specific place that comes to mind is http://www.fattoriaviticcio.com/ - they are close to Greve. Great working winery, very nice family run place.

I mention a couple of other places in this blog post - Agriturismo in Tuscany - Corzano & Paterno is close to Florence but in real countryside - and may have a nearby bus.

The others are a little more remote. There are hundreds of places though - you may find more on Tuscany Rent Direct.

My thought about where to stay was the same as yours and I am staying in Castellina in Chianti. It is centrally located between Florence and Siena and a 15 minute ride to the nearest train station.

We stayed here in 2008:

We could walk to Greve where we could catch the bus to Florence. We did just what you are proposing. (We stayed 3 nights, spent one day in FLorence and one day relaxing.) It was great. Casa Nova accepts reservations even for one nights stays (some agritourismos rent by the week or multiple nights) We were very happy with it. If you go to greve-in-chianit.com you will find some other possibilities listed as well. Just be sure you end up with one close enough to walk to the bus. The ride to Florence takes a little more than an hour. The bus runs from very early morning until about 8:00. We walked out the door of our place and could walk through the vineyards. It was quite lovely.
