Tuscany is a region of Italy about the size of Vermont. Florence is probably its most famous city.

If you do not have one, you should get a guide book of Italy

Orvieto is in Umbria but has views, feel and charm similar to a Tuscan hill town. It's only about an hour from Rome by frequent train. It's well worth considering as an alternative to a longer day of travel, especially considering your very limited time. A 1.5 hour high-speed train trip gets you to Florence, the capital of Tuscany. Going to other popular towns in Tuscany would require longer travel times. For example, it takes about 2.5 to get to Montepulciano and about 3 hours to get to Siena. I'm not personally familiar with tours to Tuscany from Rome, so I can't comment about that option.

Options by train include Ovieto (a hilltown in Umbria, 75 min), Assisi (also Umbria, 2 - 2.5 hours, some with a connection), Florence (90 min by fast train, 2x/hour), Siena (connect trains at Florence or 3 hours by direct bus, www.baltour.it).
