Tuscany

We will be traveling from Florence to Montepulciano in September and spend two nights there. Would like to make some stops along the way of some nice wineries and towns any suggestions? Would also like some itinerary suggestions while basing ourselves in Montepulciano. From there we go to Sorrento we will be renting a car when we leave Florence.

My wife and I were just there (actually we stayed at an Agriturismo near Pienza). Traveling by car is the only real way to see the area you're going to. From our base in Pienza (10 min W of Montepulciano) we spent a day driving around the Tuscan countryside (the Val d'Orcia). The N146 is a 2-lane road that goes W from Montepulciano to Pienza and San Quirico d'Orcia and is a scenic drive. You can continue W to Montalcino and then loop back via Sant'Antimo Abbey and Castiglione d'Orcia back to Montepulciano. If you want a very detailed itinerary for this that someone has already posted on the internet, you can find it at: http://www.slowtrav.com/italy/tuscany/sd_driving_tuscany.htm Or there are other driving tours and tips on the Slow Travel Italy website: http://www.slowtrav.com/italy I would say a GPS is a good idea as it is easy (although fun) to get lost. Not all the roads are marked. You can buy good detailed driving maps in Italy, or if you want to save $, you can print them off for free from the Michelin website (which also allows you to plan your itinerary beforehand, since detailed maps of smaller areas of Tuscany can be hard to find in N America). Hope this helps.
