We are celebrating our 50th anniversary and would like to go to the Tuscany area in October. I am looking at two places on in Montepulciano and the other in the Chianti area. I was thinking of 4 nights in each place. Is there much difference between the two areas or should we stay in the same place for all 8 nights.

Yes, we are flying into Florence and getting a car there.
Then, for me, it would be advisable to do 4 nights in each place so you can make shorter day trips and possibly see more of the country.
I did that very thing two years ago. We spent 4 nights in Siena (near the train station because we had a car) and 4 nights at an agriturismo east of Florence. It was nice to break it into the two different areas.
The Val d’Orcia Area is kind of far to the south, so I would choose two locations also to minimize day trip driving.
One area could be the Montepulciano/Pienza area.
The other could be the Alta Val d’Elsa (Near the freeway between Colle Val d’Elsa and north to the Val di Pesa (San Casciano Area).
Do you have any recommendations as to what farm, hotel, B &B to stay at?
