Tuscany

Question re: renting a car in the Tuscany region vs. private driver. Are there any hotels that are in a village with restaurants, shops and other interests to walk to? Do we definitely need a car? We don’t want to be dependent on the driver to get around.
We are a family of 4 (young adult kids ) that want to soak in the region via food, hiking, wineries and the people. We don’t need to see all the sites. We are also spending a few days in Cinque Terra.

It is best to have a car, but you could use a private driver.

Whatever village you stay in, of any size, will have restaurants and things to see. We have been in towns, not mentioned in any guide book, that have beautiful churches, Roman ruins etc. that rival the more famous towns.

Explore and enjoy.

There are villages/Tuscan towns that you can get to by train if you don't want to rent a car. And most all have charming hotels, restaurants, shops, etc. Not sure why you would need a private driver unless you want to take a day trip, etc., but even then, some places are accessible. Have you looked in to what towns are of interest? What time of year are you going? Where are you flying in and out of?

We are in Siena without a car -- train to and from. We took a taxi from the train station, and to a local winery. Otherwise, zero need for a car and frankly, happier without one. Plenty you can see comfortably on foot

What is making this confusing is that both Tuscany and C Terra are areas -- not specific locations. So where are you going? Florence is in Tuscany. Vernazza is in C Terra. So it depends on where you are going and staying. A car in Florence is a huge headache. Less so in some small towns. You can get by using public transit while a car can be convenient but comes with some small risks of traffic tickets for the feared no drive zones. Visiting wineries works best with a car. So what is the plan???
