Tuscan wine country - Florence homebase

My husband and I will be in Tuscany for 4 nights, and plan to make our base Florence. We planned to do a day trip one of the days, a cooking class another, and spend some time also exploring Florence, of course.

We would like to spend one night in the countryside where we would love to visit wineries and/or vineyards. Looking for a recommendation of where we should do a day trip, and another place to go for the night. We have some wiggle room in our itinerary and could extend the Tuscany trip to 5 nights for the stay in wine country.

If you have a recommendation, I would love to hear what winery or B&B you would recommend visiting/staying in.

Thank you!

Caties - You can stay at this agriturismo in Montalcino which has a great winery (Castello Banfi il Borgo). Another place with a great Winery is (Winery Tiezzi - Pod. soccorso, 53024 Montalcino SI, Italy).

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Castello di Verrazzano!!! The tour was great, the grounds were beautiful and the food was wonderful.

Il Poggione is very impressive; the wines are stellar, and they have lodging as well. The main office is in San Angelo In Colle near Montalcino, about a two hour drive from Florence. Due to travel time and your short stay, you may wish to concentrate on Chianti. A few great wineries to visit in Chianti include Poggerino, Felsina, and Badia a Coltibuono. Coltibuono also has lodging and offers cooking classes. Coltibuono and Felsina are both very beautiful properties with buildings that have historic significance. All of these wineries are about an hour drive from Florence. You should be aware that many roads in that neck of the woods are gravel/unpaved. The locals call them “white roads” (Michelin Maps denote unpaved roads with the color white). My experience has been that Italian drivers don’t let a gravel road slow them down. Not sure when your going; during the grape harvest there will be additional trucks and equipment on these back roads. Have fun on your travels!
