Tuscan Towns in Early October

I've solidified my itinerary for Tuscany.

1-2 Land in Pisa early afternoon. See Leaning Tower and take train to Lucca. Spend morning in Lucca, rent car early afternoon (yes you can rent a car in Lucca) spend afternoon in Lucca or north of Lucca.
3. Drop backpack at hotel in San Gimignano spend morning there. Spend afternoon in Volterra. Sleep San Gimignano.
4-6 Cortona. Leave San Gimignano early and visit hill towns in route to Cortona. Late afternoon and evening in Cortona. Spend following day in Pitigliano and around. Next day east into Umbria and around.
7-9 Florence. Drop off car early afternoon and walk Florence afternoon and evening. Next day Siena. Following day Fisole and more Florence.
8. Ferrara. Very early train to Ferrara. Drop backpack at hotel. Spend day in Ferrera.
9-16 Venice. Early train to Venice. Drop backpack with accommodating landlord. Grocery shop. Check into apartment and leave groceries Splurge to meet husband at Marco Polo. Five full days in Venice two or three of which we'll daytrip Paduva, Vicenza, and possibly one other town. Fly home wIthaca husband early through 17th day.

Here's where I have too many choices and need help: (1) a day or three quarter day between San Gimignano and Cortona; and (2) a day east of Cortona. Usually I'm a museum freak, but these two days and the solo part of my trip generally are about photography for paintings. Architectural city scapes are the mission. I have two hour hikes or bike rides planned for the other solo days and would like to do the same these two days too.

Also where should I meet my husband at Marco Polo? He will be coming from a connecting flight from Amsterdam and will have completed passport control in Amsterdam. .

Why back-track along the road between San Gimignano and Volterra? Is that simply to avoid leaving luggage unattended in the car? I would visit one town for the morning and then drive to the one where you'll sleep.

If you do have to leave luggage in the car, then leave no valuables in it and consider leaving it unlocked and easy to rummage through. Also have your big bags in covered storage and your day bags in the front of the car when you set out, so there's no messing with the luggage compartment at the parking spot.

Two reasons for back tracking: 1) to avoid leaving backpack in car; 2) to stay a little closer to Cortona. I could start in Volterra as the diving distance between Lucca and Volterra and Lucca and San Gimignano is negligible but it appears sights open between 9 and 9:30 in San Gimignano and 10 and 10:30 in Volterra, so a half hour back tracks makes sense to me.
