I've been listing to the audio guides and learning about food and Tuscany. My question now is once you have packed the picnic basket, where do you go? I am guessing you cannot pull off the side of the road anywhere in Tuscany or Umbria. Any suggestions?

You can do exactly that. Pull on the side of the road and eat there. The choices are practically unlimited.

What Roberto said... just pull over, have your picnic, enjoy the countryside.
Be sure to have some nice linens for your picnic and a CD of great Italian music!

Every town has a supermarket in Tuscany. Bigger cities, like Poggibonsi, have better large supermarkets than we have in the U.S. We picnic just about everywhere we go.
And if we stay at an agriturismo or bed and breakfast with cooking facilities, we cook at least 2 meals daily.
