tuscan markets

I am interested in seeking out a market for purchasing fresh produce with which to prepare dinner while we have a villa for a week. I know it sounds crazy to plan to cook while in Italy but we have a 2 year old daughter and I love to cook. So! Who knows where the best markets are and on which days of the week? I would greatly appreciate hearing your experiences. thanks!

Hi Gina, I can't really help you with the markets unless you will be in Florence itself where I have learned about what is apparently a great locals kind of market on Tuesdays with all kinds of things including food. But I just wanted to assure you that it doesn't sound crazy at all to cook. I think part of the experience is also the local ingredients, and if you like to cook then the experience of using the local authentic ingredients is just as good an experience as going to the local authentic restaurants :) So I hope you find some markets and have a great time!

We will be in Florence at least one day, I am sure. Whatever details you could share about the Tuesday market would be wonderful!

You didn't mention the town or area of Italy where you are staying. I know most towns in Tuscany, and probably all over Italy, have market days with fresh produce, cheese, meats, clothing, household goods etc., for sale. Most towns also have small grocery like stores selling fruits and vegetables every day.

We have stayed in Cortona five times, and we always prepare at least one meal at the house or apartment where we happen to be staying.

Gina - the Saturday market in Greve (about 20KM south of Florence on S222) is one of the most charming Italian experiences. They have EVERYTHING you could imagine. I highly recommend it. Have fun.

Hi Gina, I haven't been to the Tuesday market myself but plan to go when I'm there in Sept. But it is in the Cascine park in the mornings :)
