We are basing in Florence and I'd like to see some hill towns. Especially Cortona, Assisi and perugia or Deruta. But we prefer trains to buses. Is this possible? Can you do easy train day trips to these towns?

You can get from Florence to Cortona, Perugia and Assisi by Trenitalia train. You can get from Perugia to Deruta by Ferrovia Centrale Umbra train, or by APM Perugia bus. www.ferroviedellostato.it; www.fcu.it; www.apmperugia.it

You've posted the same thing twice. You can delete one to avoid confusion. As to your question, if you haven't bought the RS Florence/Tuscany book you absolutely should. It contains a wonderful section on daytrips along with all the details you need to know. Good luck.

Yep, you can reach them by train. Assisi and Cortona are my favorites of the four. Have fun!
