We have just returned form Italy. Stayed 3 nights in Volterra, a lovely VERY old hilltown, with lots to see and do. Also stayed 4 nights in Cortona, another great town. Both get considerable tourists though. You will have to hunt to find a smaller town with fewer tourists. Volterra is closest to Cinque Terre (we stayed 2 nights in CT and it was enough - it is FULL of tourists, more so than V or C.)However, the train doesn't go directly to Volterra - we had a rental car for a week so went there then. Check the Rough Guide for reliable info (as well as Rick, of course.) good luck! Julia

We wandered in Pitigliano for an afternoon as part of a trip to Rome. It was not crowded at all and south of towns we often hear about. Siena is so wonderful. We stayed at a Best Western on the outskirts. Not atmospheric but comfortable and a good value especially for day trips. I would definitely have a car.

We have just returned from Italy where we spent time in the Tuscan Hill Country. To explore, you will definitely need a car, and one with GPS. I can recommend a wonderful B&B farmhouse right outside of Siena called Il Canto del Sole (google their website)- we stayed two nights there and besides being affordable its loaded with charm, and operated by an adorable couple, its location was the perfect springboard for visits to Siena, Montepulciano, Volterra etc. Then, we took the car a little further south to Orvieto, another charming hill town, dropped the car there and took the train into Rome, about an hour. Have a great time !
