Tuscan farmhouse Apt. for extended stay

My husband & I will be spending 6 months in Italy starting March 2009. We're thinking of spending the 1st 3 months in an apartment right in Cortona. We have a likely prospect for this.
We would then like to move to an affordable? farmhouse apartment in either Tuscany or Umbria for the last 3 months. I'm hoping someone has suggestions for this. We've stayed in agriturismos, and most aren't set up for extended stays. Any suggestions regarding extended stays in Italy would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Judy in AZ

Also check VRBO.com. They listed houses for rent when I was looking for apartment rentals. Since you deal directly with the owners, you may have some leverage on extended rentals.

EU law limits stays in Italy (and other "Schengen" countries) to 90 days, unless you have a special situation such as a student visa or work visa. This has all changed from the old days. Did you already have this covered?

Thank you all for your suggestions, especially the info about the Schengen 90 Day Rule. Yes, I have heard about the Schengen 90 day rule, though I don't know much about it, and for some reason I didn't think Italy was one of the countries. If a person leaves Italy for a couple of days, goes to another country and then returns would that qualify as the beginning of another 90 days? I really would appreciate any information you can share about this. Thanks so much.

No. The days of driving over the border for lunch then returning for a new 90-day period are gone. You must leave the entire EU for 90 DAYS before you qualify to return to for a new 90-day period.

See info here. You may quality for a long-term-stay visa, but there are many hoops to jump through first. Italy is famous for bureaucracy.
