Turning rental car into Sorento on a Sunday

My husband and I are planning a trip to Italy the last week of July and first week of August. I know this is peak season in Italy, but my husband has a business trip in Rome at that time, so I am meeting him. Our intinerary is Rome (2 nights) - CT (3 nights) - Siena (4 nights) - Amalfi Coast (3 nights). My husband and I planned to take the train to CT, rent a car in La Spezia for the drive to Siena and return the car in Sorento. As luck would have it, we will be driving from Siena to Sorento on a Sunday, and from what I can tell car rental agencies close early on Sunday.

If we spend the night in Sorento, we can return the car Monday morning, then take the ferry to Positano for 2 nights. Does this make any sense? We do not want to drive the Amalfi Coast. Is there a better way? Most of the lodgings I've wanted to book in Positano require a 3 night stay.

Try Residience la Tavolozza - best view in Positano only 8 rooms but on the main street overlooking the rest of the town -beautiful- celeste.dileva@tiscali.it. We stayed 2 nights and were lucky enough that she had another room vacant when we decided to stay one more night. Make sure you stay on the lst level below street level. I think taking the ferry is wise. As for returning the car have you thought of returning the car i8n Orvieto (about l1/2 hours outside Rome and taking the train to Sorrento. We did drive from Tuscany to Sorrento 3 years ago. The drive is unspectacular and busy especially around Naples. The train would be to Naples then the then the local train to Sorrento.

I tried to book Residience la Tavolozza, but she has a minimum 3 night stay in August and I really wanted to stay there.

I think what I might do is drive to Rome as their rental location is open on Sundays, then take the train to Naples, and the local train from Naples to Sorrento and then the ferry to Positano. This way I can stay the 3 nights at la Tavolozza. The only disadvantage is I'm going to have take the ferry back to Sorrento in the morning for a trip to Pompei.

Please tell me your thoughts.

Susan,
Two years ago we took the bus to sorrento, train to pompei from Positano. It was a nauseating, 1 1/2 hour bus ride and standing room only train ride. The ferry is a great way to travel and relatively inexpensive. I wish we had done it.

That sounds like something worth looking into to. Thanks for the suggestions. The logistics are a nightmare, but the trip will be fabulous.

Sorry the delay in replying, it's dinner time over here.

The answer is that the full timetable on Trenitalia cannot be seen more than 60 days in advance. If you look at this link where I put in a journey for 6 June, you will see that earlier trains are available. You can use the current timetable for planning purposes but not booking etc. Also note that the timetable will change in mid June, but usually not by more than a few minutes either way.

Hope this helps.

Linda,

According to the train schedule for August 2, the earliest train to Salerno doesn't get in until 18:56 (almost 7pm) and the last ferry to Positano leaves Salerno at 17:15. Am I reading this correctly?
