Turkish Airlines-Baggage Questions & OMNIAPASS Rome

2 Week Honeymoon/Babymoon Italy:

I've found a few forums on this topic, but nothing recent—hoping some recent travelers can share their experiences!

We're flying Turkish Airlines from Dulles to Naples with a connection in Istanbul. Originally, we had only a 2-hour layover, but thankfully, our flight to Naples was changed, giving us almost 12 hours in Istanbul.

My main concern is the carry-on weight limit. While my bag meets the size requirements, I find it nearly impossible to pack for a two-week trip and stay under their strict weight limit. Do they actually weigh carry-on bags at the gate?

I've also read mixed reviews about Turkish Airlines and lost luggage. Do they have a history of mishandling bags without offering solutions or compensation? Are there any steps I can take to minimize the risk of my luggage getting lost? With a 12-hour layover, does that increase or decrease the likelihood of my checked bag arriving on time?

Since everything is booked on a single ticket with Turkish Airlines, will I need to collect and recheck my luggage in Istanbul, or will it be transferred automatically?

Once we arrive in Naples, we have a private car service to take us to our hotel (about an hour away). However, they only wait 45 minutes. If I check a bag, will that be enough time to get through baggage claim and meet the driver?

Lastly, any tips on purchasing or using the Omnia Pass in Rome? Specifically, the 72-hour Hop-On/Hop-Off option—worth it or not?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Turkish Air, excellent airline.

Do they actually weigh carry-on bags at the gate?

Yes, except when they don't.

With a 12-hour layover, does that increase or decrease the likelihood
of my checked bag arriving on time?

12 hour layover I presume increases the odds of lost luggage. Never heard Turkish Air was worse than average.

Since everything is booked on a single ticket with Turkish Airlines,
will I need to collect and recheck my luggage in Istanbul, or will it
be transferred automatically?

Should go all the way.

Never use a transfer service that does not take your flight information and intend to use it. Your flight could be delayed for all sorts of reasons, or there could be a line. Make sure you have a contact number. With a carry-on, I would expect to be out of the airport in less than 45 minutes, but you really never know.
While it may be inconvenient, weight is important on a plane--I personally find it reassuring when airlines take it seriously. You really never know when it will be enforced. Maybe plan to do laundry and take less?

Considering OP will be entering the Schengen zone upon arrival in Naples, and will have to clear passport control, 45 minutes seems unduly optimistic

However, they only wait 45 minutes.

Do you not have the ability to set the 'start' time? If it were me I would set it (the start of the waiting time) for 90 minutes after arrival.

Hi Camille -
Addressing the just the Omnia Pass question, I've never seen that pass recommended on these forums, and they have largely negative reviews elsewhere. The most-mentioned negatives are in regard to the price, and that for all sorts of reasons HOHO buses are a lousy way to try and sightsee this particular city. You also have to make advance reservations to the most-visited attractions.

The Omnia Pass is a package of the 72-hour Roma Pass (2 free attractions; see the FAQ for making reservations to the attractions which require them.) and the Omnia Card. The two chosen attractions must be the first and 2nd attractions you visit before any of the rest for which you only get (sometimes small) discounts. The Roma Pass does include access to public transport but it doesn't cover journeys to/from the airport. The historic center of Rome is also not all that expansive: we've rarely felt the need the use the system so it was cheaper for us to just buy a couple of single-ride tickets and tuck them away for a just-in-case.

The Omnia Card covers the Vatican, the hoho, and a few other Catholic sites but some of those are free to begin with, and one of them - Mamertine Prison - is a skip, IMHO. You do have to make an advance reservation for the Vatican museums. The card doesn't offer priority entry to St Peter's Basilica. The website, IMHO, is also lacking easy-to-use instructions.

This is a really good overview of tourist passes in Rome by a local resident who knows their stuff. Take a good look at the advice about the Omnia?

Flew Turkish in 2022 and they didn't weigh our carry on bags (we didn't check bags). We were in business class, so not sure if that's any different in economy, but no issues both in ORD on departure and IST on transit. We had an 8 hr layover, so not long enough for us to leave the airport. Since we were in business class we utilized the great business class lounge in IST including showers to refresh after the flight. Lots of good food options too.
